In an email conversation between Rusty Russell and Joseph Poon, the use of HMAC-of-tx instead of txid is questioned. The purpose of using HMAC-of-tx is unclear and Rusty Russell asks what it gains over txid. Joseph Poon presumes that indexing by txid is necessary to check if a penalty transaction broadcast is required and therefore, txid cannot be used as a secret key.
