In an email conversation between Gavin Andresen and Mike Hearn on September 24, 2013, Hearn suggested changing the parameter in BIP 72 from "request" to simply "r" to make QR codes more scannable. Andresen responded that it was not too late to make the change, as smaller QR codes were a good reason for doing so.
