In an email exchange between Eric Mockensturm and Brian McQueen, they discuss static linking of libz into crypto when compiling crypto. Brian had to add libz.a to the makefile.osx which was coming from the crypto libs. Meanwhile, Douglas Huff warns against a bad update in MacPorts and suggests installing newer 1.46 boost packages. In addition, Gavin Andresen updated src/makefile.osx and doc/build-osx.txt assuming that the MacPorts versions of dependencies will be used and the -mt boost libraries will be used. He also modified makefile.unix and makefile.osx to auto-build dependencies using gcc's -MMD option. The email exchange took place on the Bitcoin-development mailing list.
