In a recent email to the bitcoin-dev mailing list, Hampus Sjöberg advocated for keeping the blocksize low at present but increasing it in the future when needed, preferably via an extension block as a softfork. However, Luke-Jr disagreed with this approach, stating that extension blocks are not softforks and are unnecessarily complicated. Instead, when the time comes, the block size should be increased only using a hardfork.
