In an email exchange on the bitcoin-dev mailing list, James MacWhyte proposed adding a transaction size limit of 10kb to prevent quadratic hashing problems. This would not only solve the issue but also invalidate any pre-signed transactions that are currently in use. However, changing the rules like this could be seen as unfair to some users who have already relied on the previous system.
