In a Bitcoin-dev email sent by Sergio Demian Lerner on May 10, 2016, he expressed his opinion that changing the protocol would send a message to the ecosystem that ASIC optimizations should be kept secret. Lerner argued that if this particular optimization had been kept secret, there would be no need for any action and countless other optimizations would also remain unknown.
