In a discussion on bitcoin-dev mailing list, Sergio Demian Lerner argues that AsicBoost patent can be an extra barrier of entry for new ASIC manufacturers trying to enter the market. This can counter free competition and decentralization. Additionally, centralizing the technology with one manufacturer puts them in control of who gets access to it, which goes against the decentralized nature of Bitcoin. Lerner is not sure if he supports a hard fork to ban AsicBoost, but points out the real problems with it.
