Summary:

A group of researchers from Stanford, Maryland, Concordia, and Princeton have written a "systemization" paper about Bitcoin-related research. The paper aims to bridge the gap between the computer science research community and the cryptocurrency community. It will be presented at the IEEE Security and Privacy conference later this year, but a draft has been released early. The researchers hope that their paper will bring attention to the best ideas and research questions from the Bitcoin community and inspire further research. The scope of the paper extends beyond Bitcoin to explain the differences between altcoins and other next-generation cryptocurrency designs. The research effort has taken around two years, with several pauses and restarts. The team is still open to feedback and plans to continue updating the online version of the paper. The draft can be found at http://www.jbonneau.com/doc/BMCNKF15-IEEESP-bitcoin.pdf.
