In a discussion thread on 27th March 2014, Pieter Wuille expressed his opinion about the necessity of extra layers in the "cointype" inside the derivation. He stated that there is already support for magic bytes in the serialized form. In response to this, Pavol Rusnak clarified that cointype in path is meant for separation purposes and not identification.
