In an email conversation, Gavin Andresen and Mark Friedenbach discussed the use case of the Lightning Network payment channel network. Unlike other payment channel designs, the lightning payment channel network allows users to pay people without pre-funding their accounts as long as there is a path in the network from them to the payee. However, according to Andresen, this solution is not ideal for personal transactions as it requires hubs, which could lead to centralization issues. Additionally, he believes that the Lightning Network is not a scaling solution for the types of payments currently handled by the Bitcoin network. Nonetheless, Andreas acknowledges the potential of the Lightning Network for micropayments and innovative payment solutions.
