In a conversation between Luke Dashjr and Pieter on June 6, 2015, they discussed the use of an invalid opcode rather than OP_RETURN in sharing code. Dashjr agreed with Pieter that this should not be so cleanly compatible with Bitcoin transactions. However, Pieter argued that using an invalid opcode would only send funds into the void without invalidating the transaction.
