In June 2014, Wladimir proposed the adaptation of a string-based namespace for extensions in the Bitcoin protocol. This was discussed on GitHub and questioned by some users who suggested using UUIDs or OIDs instead of textual strings. The concern was that textual strings would consume more bandwidth than fixed-length UUIDs and OIDs.
