The BIP draft presented aims to provide a format for path templates that enables interoperability between various software and hardware vendors in terms of specifying derivation path restrictions. For instance, a software vendor can create a "profile" containing constraints on the paths used in their custom derivation schemes, which may be a path template string provided in the documentation. A user of the software solution installs the profile into a hardware wallet that supports path templates or richer profiles by pasting the path template string into a configuration utility program and confirming the setting on-device. The device then enforces the constraints specified in the template, allowing the software solution to work as intended by the software vendor.
