In a recent email exchange on the bitcoin-dev mailing list, the topic of discussion was the newly formed Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund. The purpose of this fund is to defend developers from lawsuits related to their activities in the bitcoin ecosystem. The fund will be free and voluntary for developers to take advantage of if they so wish. It will start with a corps of volunteer and part-time lawyers, with the board of the fund responsible for determining which lawsuits and defendants it will help defend. While some positives were noted in this initiative, such as providing financial help for developers and protecting them from rich scammers, there were also suggestions made. One suggestion was that the name of the fund could be confusing or misleading for newbies as it is not an official bitcoin legal fund. Another suggestion was that people involved in important funds should not comment or influence soft fork-related discussions. The importance of the word "The" in the title of the email and the name of the fund was also emphasized. It is "a" legal defense fund, and anyone is welcome to create alternatives. Moreover, Alex or anyone else should not be denied the opportunity to comment on future soft forks or anything about bitcoin. Everyone should have equal rights to participate and their comments should be judged on their merit.
