In a 2014 email exchange between Andreas Schildbach and Ryan X. Charles, Charles informed Schildbach that BitPay was working on a new standard for authentication based on bitcoin-like addresses and expressed interest in collaborating with the community to establish a complete, decentralized authentication protocol. Jeff Garzik, a Bitcoin core developer and open source evangelist, responded to the email thread with a link to the Identity Protocol v1 on the Bitcoin wiki. Garzik also included information about his involvement with BitPay, an online payment service provider.
