On August 19, 2015, a post on Reddit claimed that an employee of Blockstream asked for Gavin Andresen to be removed from his position as chief scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation. In response, Peter Todd, a Bitcoin developer and consultant, stated that he believed this was a reasonable request. Todd argued that having Andresen in this position misleads the public about how Bitcoin operates, giving the impression that it has centralized decision-making like conventional financial systems do. He also believes that this harms the reputation of Bitcoin as a whole by confusing the public into thinking there aren't major differences between Bitcoin and those conventional financial systems.Todd's statement raises the question of whether the request to remove Andresen was made by an individual acting on their own personal opinion or on behalf of the company. If it was the latter, it would imply that compromise is unlikely to be reached, and the ecosystem should start planning immediately for the potential hard fork instead of waiting for things to be resolved. The challenges facing the Bitcoin Foundation are not directly related to this issue.
