In an email exchange on August 8, 2014, Mike Hearn proposed a command line option for bitcoind. Wladimir expressed concern about conflating the external and internal interface, suggesting that the two interfaces should be well-separated. He recommended that bitcoind listens on a separate port for connections from plugins. This port should not be used for normal P2P traffic and could also be a UNIX socket instead of a TCP port.
