In an email thread on the Bitcoin-development mailing list, Gregory Maxwell discusses the removal of the internal miner and getwork from Litecoin 0.8.x. He notes that Pooler's CPU minerd supports both sha256d and scrypt, and suggests adding GBT support to aid in the goal of removing the internal miner and getwork completely. Maxwell also expresses his desire to remove the internal miner to eliminate extra code and complexity and package a GBT miner that would actually be usable on the mainnet.
