On April 26, 2017, shaolinfry proposed a draft BIP (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal) to redeploy segwit (Segregated Witness) using BIP-8. This proposal aims to activate segwit through a user activated soft fork (UASF) by utilizing versionbits with guaranteed lock-in. The motivation behind this proposal is the reluctance of miners to signal the BIP9 segwit deployment, despite a significant portion of the Bitcoin ecosystem desiring its activation. The draft BIP specifies that if the BIP is not already locked-in or activated by the timeout, a UASF will be triggered to deploy segwit again using versionbits. This approach allows users to have sufficient time to prepare and eliminates the need for a miner supermajority. However, it still permits the possibility of an earlier miner activated soft fork (MASF). The proposed start date for this deployment is November 16, 2017, with a BIP8 timeout set for July 4, 2018.It should be noted that these dates are specific to Bitcoin mainnet, as segwit is already activated on Bitcoin testnet. The deployment will utilize service bit (1) and will be deployed by BIP8 under the name "uasegwit" using bit 2.The author suggests deploying this BIP well in advance of the BIP8 start time to ensure that the timeout is sufficiently far in the future, giving Bitcoin users ample time to upgrade their systems. The start time of this BIP comes after the BIP9 "segwit" timeout to avoid compatibility issues with older nodes.Currently, there have been no comments on this draft BIP proposal, which is still in the draft status under Standards Track. The reference implementation for this deployment can be found at the provided GitHub link.
